Elementary Teachers!

Are you looking for ways to enrich your teaching of reading and writing?

Then sign up for NIWP’s workshop Literacy Topics in the Elementary Classroom!

In a two-day workshop, Sherry Sanden will present four topics broadly focused around Literacy Topics in the Elementary Classroom, each a half-day segment of the workshop. The following is a list of possible topics:

  • linking assessment & instruction in the reading classroom (this could also be a whole-day workshop)
  • building a culture of literacy in the elementary classroom
  • using picture books to enable elementary writing
  • reading comprehension strategy instruction (this could also be a whole-day workshop)
  • using technology in the elementary classroom
  • building a literacy block based on The Daily Five
  • using poetry in the elementary classroom

Interested teachers will be polled about their preference of topics and Sherry will prepare the class based on the topics that are of interest to the majority of the participants.

The workshop will be held in Bonners Ferry on Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th. The  two consecutive days will fulfill the 15 contact hour requirement for the one-credit course.  An outside assignment must also be completed in order to fulfill the University requirement of 45 academic hours per credit (15 contact hours and 30 hours outside academic work).  The cost of the workshop would be $140.00 per participant, plus the credit fee of $60.00 for those who would like credit. Of course, teachers can take the course without credit as well. A minimum of 10 participants is required. Visit our website at www.niwp.org for more information about NIWP classes and events.
