Supportive Administrators Are Key Components of Effective Education

The Northwest Inland Writing Project appreciates and encourages the support area administrators give their staff members. The annual Administrator's Luncheon is an opportunity for NIWP to both express that appreciation and listen to the needs and concerns of principals, superintendents, and curriculum directors of our local area. If you would like to receive an invitation to this special event, please contact Carol Nelson.

NIWP Teacher Consultants are trained and effective workshop and course presenters. Writing and literacy strategies are presented in a variety of methods, tailor-made to meet the needs of your district and your staff. From book-reading groups, conferences, and workshops to extended, in-depth and comprehensive classes, the Northwest Inland Writing Project focuses on helping classroom teachers attain deep, sustainable, and research-based changes within their lessons, units, and students.

Our first priority is learning from you: what are your concerns with your students and your school? What areas of reading and writing literacy in your district need reinforcement, remediation, or rebuilding? How can NIWP best meet the literacy goals of your individual buildings and classrooms?

NIWP is an approved No Child Left Behind provider.

NIWP sponsored professional development

NIWP has developed a wide range of professional development offerings for schools, school districts, and administrators. Programs are designed to help educators improve writing and the teaching of writing and literacy and to strengthen teacher leadership in order to affect exemplary classroom practices. All programs are designed in collaboration with school leadership teams or administrative offices and align with national, state and local initiatives to support student achievement across the content areas. An online request form is available.

The NIWP Beliefs About Professional Development

  • Teachers are the best teachers of teachers
  • Writing and literacy are central to learning across content areas
  • Professional development is an on-going process across the life span
  • All teachers should have access to quality professional development
  • Successful teachers of writing are writers themselves
  • Universities and schools can build powerful, lasting partnerships
  • Classroom teachers and other educators are critical to meaningful change

How to Arrange Professional Development

  • All NIWP seminars and courses are led by Idaho and/or Washington school teachers. This means that all of our work is done with Idaho and Washington standards, benchmarks, and new curriculum frameworks in mind. Our professional development designs are flexible so that we may co-design a program that best suits your school or district improvement plan.
