DEADLINE UPDATE

The deadline for Summer Institute 2008 is March 15, 2008. Early submissions are appreciated. The earlier a teacher applies, the better the chances are for scholarship help.

Nuts & Bolts

The 2008 Summer Institute will run July 7th through August 1st in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The course is limited to fifteen openings. All interested teachers should apply by March 15, 2008, in order to be considered the Summer Institute's scholarships. Generous scholarships (up to $1000 for qualified applicants) are available for the six credit course upon application. Eligible teachers, living 60 or more miles from the Summer Institute site, may also qualify for housing stipends (up to $250). To initiate your application process, complete the Request for Information.

Overview

During the Summer Institutes, kindergarten through college teachers share strategies for teaching writing, learn the theory and research behind the teaching of writing, and take time to write for themselves under the guidance of classroom teachers and visiting poets and fiction writers. Participants will receive six graduate credits from the University of Idaho which can apply towards a master's degree at the UI and most other colleges. Institute topics include the following:

  • The writing process

  • Integrated reading and writing
  • Writing as thinking
  • Peer responding and editing
  • Evaluating writing and Six-Trait scoring
  • Conventions and error analysis
  • ESL/Special education and writing
  • Writing modes: expressive, explanatory, persuasive
  • Writing across the curriculum
